Cell Control Array (CCA)

Reliable controls for IHC, ISH and special stains

Zytomed Systems Cell Control Arrays (CCA) are designed for qualitative control of immunohistochemical staining (IHC), in situ hybridization (ISH), and special stains. Complete FFPE blocks are manufactured using a patented method that embeds cell and tissue cores homogeneously in paraffin, ensuring consistent quality and reliable performance across sections.

Each control block can be sectioned using standard microtomy and mounted on coated slides. A myocardial tissue core facilitates orientation during sectioning and microscopy. Blocks are approximately 5 mm high and typically yield up to 150 sections in some cases, as many as 350. Their small format allows patient and control tissue to be mounted side by side on the same slide (on-slide control).

CCA applications

New marker establishment

Supports the establishment of new antibodies by providing reliable positive and negative controls for IHC.

Assay optimization

Facilitate fine-tuning of staining protocols, ensuring reliable and reproducible results

Protocol development

Support the development of new staining protocols or the adaptation of existing ones by providing reliable reference materials for consistent test setup and benchmarking.

Routine IHC runs

Serve as standardized on-slide controls alongside patient samples to monitor daily assay quality and detect potential technical issues early.

Features

On-slide control format saves time and material

Secure core retention thanks to homogenous paraffin embedding

Dyed paraffin and myocardial core for easy handling and orientation

High reproducibility and consistent performance

Our Cell Control Arrays Portfolio

CCA Receptor (IHC / ISH)

Includes four cores from breast carcinoma cell lines with varying expression levels of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and HER2 (ERBB2). This allows differentiation between high and low staining intensities, supporting the assessment of assay sensitivity. The array is suitable for both immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization applications.

CCA Virus (IHC & ISH)

Designed for qualitative control of immunohistochemical staining and in situ hybridization of virus-infected tissues. The paraffin block contains cores of cell lines infected with Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2), Epstein-Barr-Virus (EBV), and polyomavirus SV40.

CCA ALK (IHC)

Contains one core of ALK-positive cells and one core of ALK-negative cells. It is suitable as a qualitative control for immunohistochemical stains on ALK-positive tissues, such as lymphoma and NSCLC. RNA can be extracted for detection of gene fusions like EML4-ALK (E13;A20) via RT-PCR.

CCA ROS1 (IHC)

Comprises two ROS1-positive cell lines with weak and medium expression levels, one ROS1-negative cell line, and a core of myocardial tissue. RNA can be extracted for RT-PCR detection of CD74-ROS1 fusion transcripts.

CCA Bacteria & Fungi (IHC / Special Stains)

Contains four cores representing Mycobacterium (e.g. Ziehl Neelsen), Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria (Gram-staining), and filamentous fungi (e.g. PAS or Grocott). Antibodies against Mycobacterium tuberculosis show positive reactivity on the Mycobacterium core. DNA can be extracted and used as a positive control for PCR-based detection of mycobacteria.
