In medical histology, IHC is generally used to identify and classify tumor cells. Tumors that appear morphologically identical can thus be classified on the basis of their protein expression pattern. These tumor-characteristic proteins are detected by the specific binding of antibodies to their antigen (epitope), the so-called antigen-antibody reaction. You will find reagents that are optimized for your laboratory for each step of the immunohistochemical staining procedure.
In histological routine, standardization of staining should be aimed for. Immunohistochemistry is always assessed in a morphological context. The staining result must match the tissue, the disease, and the labeled cells.
